Muslim group pressures major hotel chain to cancel anti-Islam ‘ACT for America’s’ annual conference

Marriott International has been petitioned to cancel an event booked by ACT for America, as the organization is accused of being “anti-Muslim.” In a new BuzzFeed article, the “leading Muslim-American legal advocacy group,” called Muslim Advocates, makes its case for the claim and the cancellation.

ACT for America seeks to “preserve American culture” and keep the nation safe by informing and organizing citizens. According to its website, it is “the nation’s largest nonprofit, non-partisan, grassroots national security organization,” focused on impacting legislative outcomes to protect America from terrorism.

The group, founded by Brigitte Gabriel, is 750,000 members strong and boasts over 12,000 volunteer activists. Gabriel, a Lebanese American, is an outspoken lecturer and terrorism expert who has been a guest analyst on many of the leading news outlets, including Fox News and CNN, advising about the rise of global Islamic terrorism. The BuzzFeed article labels ACT for America an “anti-Muslim group.” ACT opposes jihadi terror and Sharia oppression, which the media typically maintains has nothing to do with Islam, as documented by Jihad Watch.

Muslim Advocates reportedly sent a letter to Arne Sorenson, CEO of Marriott International on Sep. 11, asking him to cancel the annual ACTCON2017 conference held by ACT, which is scheduled to take place at the Marriott Crystal Gateway in Arlington, Virginia, on Oct. 2 and 3.

Expected speakers include Walid Phares, a National security and foreign affairs expert who advised President Donald J. Trump on foreign policy during the presidential campaign, and Katrina Pierson, the president’s former campaign spokesperson. It will also include Hazem Farraj, an ex-Muslim author and activist.

According to the article, Muslim Advocates wants Marriott to “honor their stance on diversity and inclusion by canceling ACT for America’s annual conference.”

From BuzzFeed:

“Your past statements on behalf of LGBTQ equality, for humane immigration reform, and your recent comments that ‘symbolism is wrong’ on the Muslim ban, show your understanding of how bigotry and discrimination are not only wrong, they are bad for business,” Scott Simpson, the group’s public advocacy director, wrote.

Speaking about the ban on a company conference call in February, Sorenson said “across much of the world” the travel ban “is a really big deal.”

The letter reportedly goes on to note that in 2010, Marriott decided to cancel an event by a nationalist group.

Simpson then challenges Sorenson to respond the way other businesses have responded to such pressure, and comply.

“Declining to host ACT for America would help to ensure that Marriott International does not fall behind other companies and would be true to your company’s stated commitment to inclusivity,” Simpson reportedly concluded in his letter.

According to the article, Marriott International confirmed receiving Simpson’s letter but had taken no action. So, BuzzFeed contacted Marriott itself. A spokesperson for Marriott International reportedly told BuzzFeed News: “We are a hospitality company that provides public accommodations and function space. Acceptance of business does not indicate support or endorsement of any group or individual.”

BuzzFeed then reports:

ACT, which has been labeled an extremist group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, claims to have over half a million members and over 1,000 chapters. Ret. Gen. Michael Flynn — who President Trump fired as national security adviser for lying about communicating with Russia — called Islam a “cancer” at an ACT meeting and is a member of the group’s board.

A spokesperson for ACT for America said in an email to BuzzFeed News that the group has a “zero tolerance policy for hatred or bigotry of any kind.”

“The recent statement by Muslim Advocates in an attempt to suppress the speech of those holding opposing views from theirs is disappointing, since it is based on a series of outright fabrications,” the statement said.

“In recent months, however, purely political advocacies like Muslim Advocates and the Southern Poverty Law Center have deliberately attempted to redefine legitimate political differences as hate, in an effort to stop any public conversation about them,” the statement continued.

“By attempting to pressure the venue to cancel it through the distribution of outright lies, Muslim Advocates simply exposes itself as a dishonest political partisan on issues important to millions of Americans. We hope they reconsider their outrageous conduct,” the statement concluded…

Note that the Southern Poverty Law Center has a hard-Left bias; Muslim Advocates has received at least $1.8 million from George Soros, and has a long and consistent record of opposing counter-terror efforts, according to Jihad Watch.
