Germany  A female, 28, sustained serious injuries when her ex-husband tied a noose around her neck, then tied the other end to the car, and then dragged her in the street. The man committed the act against his ex-wife while their two-year-old child was in the car with him. The Hanover State Court sentenced the man to 14 years in jail on Thursday.

According to reports, the man was driving a VW Passat as he dragged the woman over asphalt and old cobblestones at high speed. This all took place while their son was in the car, allegedly screaming while watching his mother’s torture.

During sentencing, the man told his ex-wife, “I am infinitely sorry for what I did to you and our son.” The mother was less than accepting, reportedly refusing to look at him with hands clasped over her ears as he spoke.

During testimony, the court learned that the woman’s life was saved when the rope snapped. Concerned citizens rushed to help her as she lay outside a local fast-food restaurant.

The woman was in a coma for weeks following the attack. She’d recovered just enough to appear in  court.

“She wanted to testify in court even though she barely remembers the evening,” said the woman’s lawyer, Roman von Alvensleben.  He added, “She can no longer bring herself to say her ex-husband’s name, referring to him only as ‘the perpetrator.'”

As for the son, he suffered severe psychiatric trauma. “He constantly wakes in the night and yells ‘mama, ouch, mama, ouch,'” said von Alvensleben. He says he hasn’t experienced another case where “the intention to kill was so clearly visible.”

“It is an absolute miracle that she is alive at all,” von Alvensleben said.

The couple were originally married in an Islamic ceremony in March 2013. The marriage broke apart in May, 2015.

Reportedly, the man routinely beat and abused the woman when they were together.

Allegedly, a month before the attack, the man threatened his ex-wife and his son, saying, “One of you two will soon no longer be alive.”

On the evening when the attempted murder took place, the two were fighting about money.  That’s when he stabbed her near the heart with a knife just before putting the rope around her neck. She was then struck over the head with the blunt side of an axe, leaving her skull fractured. He then began the dragging assault.

During the trial, the judge called the man’s treatment and views of his wife “outdated” with “no place in modern times.”

In addition to his prison term, the man must pay his ex-wife more than £100,000 ($128,870 US) as compensation for her injuries.
