Screaming “allahu akbar” and waving a knife, a Palestinian woman was fatally shot on Sunday night while trying to attack a border officer at the Jerusalem entrance to the Old City’s Damascus Gate, according to police reports.
Terrorist attacks against civilians have become an ever-increasing problem near the historic area during the past year.
Police cordoned off the area and heightened security while launching an investigation into the woman’s identity and motive.
The attack took place just hours after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated his belief that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has been “praising terrorists and paying them through a so-called “martyrs’ fund.” The fund has already paid off approximately 35,000 families of Palestinians killed and wounded in its decades-long war with Israel.
Palestinian officials consider the fund to be a sort of welfare account for victims, but Netanyahu asserts that the fund glorifies and inspires terrorism.
According to a report in the Daily News, “Since 2015, Palestinian attackers have killed 42 Israelis, two visiting Americans and a British student, mainly in stabbing assaults. During that same time, Israeli forces have killed some 245 Palestinians.”
