The highly controversial liberal congressman from Minnesota, Keith Ellison, who is also a top candidate for leading the Democratic National Committee, told CNN audiences last night that impeachment investigations should begin over President Donald Trump‘s conduct in the White House.
The outspoken Ellison said, “I think that Donald Trump has already done a number of things which legitimately raise the question of impeachment.”
Ellison said Trump is in violation of the Constitution’s Emoluments Clause, which forbids a president from receiving payments of any kind from foreign governments or officials. Ellison says his claim is supported by Trump’s ownership of a Washington D.C. hotel. Ellison points to the fact that foreign diplomats stay as paying guests at the hotel, thus, placing President Trump in violation of that law.
Although Ellison makes a potentially valid argument, President Trump has said he will donate every penny collected from those guests to the U.S. Treasury.
