Navy Destroyer Forced To Fire Warning Shots At Iranian Vessels

On Sunday, four Iranian vessels were warned by the Navy’s USS Mahan, after they attempted to close in on the destroyer at high rates of speed.

Reuters reports the destroyer was escorting two U.S. ships in the Straight of Hormuz when the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard began to close in.

According to the report, the USS Mahan tried to communicate with the boats, telling them to stop, but when they did not respond, the destroyer was forced to fire three warning shots. A Navy helicopter also dropped a smoke float.

Fox News reports this is one of several incidents that has occurred with Iran in the past year.

“This is both dangerous and reckless on their part,” said John Bolton, former U.S. Ambassador to the UN in an interview with Fox News. “It’s training for the kinds of runs they would make against U.S. Naval vessels if they did want to engage in hostility.”
