Republican representative Mike Rogers of Alabama reportedly introduced the “Border Wall Funding Act of 2017” this week, which would ultimately require illegal immigrants to pay taxes that will fund the construction of President Donald Trump’s border wall.
The bill will impose a 2 percent tax on all remittances going back to Mexico from illegal aliens living in the United States. Some legal immigrants may get hit with the tax as well, as reports indicate as much as $54.2 billion is sent back to the home countries of both illegal and legal immigrants living in the U.S.
“President Trump has made it very clear that he intends to complete a wall along our Southern border,” Rogers said in a news release. “As a senior member of the Homeland Security committee, I have long supported the border wall which will protect Americans.”
The Center for Immigration Studies has released multiple reports on the amount of money the U.S. economy loses in money sent to Mexico from illegal and legal immigrants. Reportedly, $24 billion was sent from the U.S. to Mexico in remittances in 2014 alone. The report also states that South and Central American countries took in 15 percent of their overall growth domestic products in remittances from illegal and legal immigrants living in the U.S.
“Anyone who sends their money to countries that benefit from our porous borders and illegal immigration should be responsible for providing some of the funds needed to complete the wall,” Rogers said, announcing the bill. “This bill keeps money in the American economy, and, most importantly, it creates a funding stream to build the wall.”
Cassie Williams, a spokesperson for the Federation for American Immigration (FAIR) told Breitbart that the bill has their support.
“Congressman Rogers’ bill should be supported on both sides of the aisle because it will help reduce illegal immigration and save American jobs at no cost to taxpayers,” Williams said.
A remittance tax has long been supported by many immigration experts.
“This is something that actually could be done, and it would bring a billion dollars a year into the Treasury while setting up a series of records that state and federal tax officials could use to collect the income taxes that should be paid by illegal aliens and other remittance senders,” David North, a Center for Immigration Studies expert, wrote in April 2016.
The border wall is estimated to cost $12 billion.
