A 1984 child-welfare report has recently re-surfaced,  revealing that an investigator from Oregon found Ed Murray, Seattle’s Democratic mayor, had sexually abused a foster child in his care. It further recommended Murray not be allowed to foster other children.

According to the Seattle Times, Murray’s foster son Jeff Simpson claimed he’d been molested by his foster dad in the 1980s. The child-welfare report appears to substantiate the claim.

“In the professional judgment of this caseworker who has interviewed numerous children of all ages and of all levels of emotional disturbance regarding sexual abuse, Jeff Simpson has been sexually abused by… Edward Murray,” the report said.

According to reports, Murray was never charged with the crime. The openly gay mayor, elected in 2013, said the report is irrelevant, stating, “The system vindicated me.”

Contrary to Murray’s statement, the records show problems with the victim’s behavior led prosecutors to drop the charges, despite their belief that Murray molested Simpson.

“It was Jeff’s emotional instability, history of manipulative behavior and the fact that he has again run away and made himself unavailable that forced my decision,” Deputy District Attorney Mary Tomlinson wrote in a 1984 letter.

In the letter, Tomlinson writes that prosecutors were reluctant to proceed because there is a higher burden of proof in a criminal case.

“However, this in no way means that the District Attorney’s Office has decided Jeff’s allegations are not true,” Tomlinson added.

Murray has faced other allegations of sexual molestation raised by several young men who say that the incidents also occurred in the 1980s.

Liberal leaning Seattle is a sanctuary city, a status firmly backed by Murray, who also pushed for gay marriage as a state legislator and a $15 an hour minimum wage as mayor.

Although Murray denies the claims, he has announced that he won’t run for re-election.
