With the islands of the Caribbean are barely able to function after Hurricane Irma, another storm is threatening to cause more damage. Hurricane Maria, now a Category 1 storm, is on its way toward the Leeward Islands.
Maria turned from tropical storm to hurricane on Sunday afternoon.
As of 5pm Sunday, Maria was 140 miles east-northeast of Barbados with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.
St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat Guadeloupe and Dominica were issued a hurricane warning.
Unfortunately, Maria’s path is very similar to that of Hurricane Irma’s, and therefore she could hit Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Haiti. As for making its way to the U.S., the National Hurricane Center says it is too early to tell.
Meanwhile, as Hurricane Maria increases in terms of power, Hurricane Jose is heading for the U.S. and is set to hit the east coast Thursday. The storm had lost some strength, but has since picked up power and is back to a Category 1 hurricane.
