New Jersey School District Being Pressured to Recognize Muslim Holiday

There may soon come a day when President’s Day, MLK Day or your sought after spring break is cut short or nonexistent due to the new outcry by Muslim parents that school districts should take off days for Muslim holiday recognition. The newest district of schools facing pressure is Jersey City, where parents have been pressuring officials to add the holidays of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha to the school calendar.

“We’re no longer the minority,” said one Muslim speaker at a school board meeting last year. Jessica Abdelnabbi, a Muslim parent of three girls, told The Jersey Journal earlier this week: “We’re diverse. We’re only asking for one day.” [note: Eid al-Fitr does not fall on a school day this calendar year].

Last year, New York City became the first major metropolitan city to close its schools to recognize the Muslim holidays. Soon after, Paterson, Trenton and Atlantic City followed suit. And in March of 2016, Clifton was forced to add the holidays after attempting to reject them twice.

Is it truly a changing demographic, or a matter of pressurizing political correctness to be “inclusive to all?” Regardless, this situation is like the famous children’s book “When You Give a Mouse a Cookie.” When one gives a mouse a cookie, the mouse is going to then want milk. When one gives the persistent Muslim community the holidays of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, they will want recognition for the Day of Ashura, the Birthday of Ali’ibn Abi Talib, the Hajj, and so on and so forth
