In an age when Islamic terrorism is growing and lone wolf attacks are commonplace, one city is taking new measures to ensure the safety of its citizens.
On Wednesday, lawmakers in Quebec, Canada put forward a religious neutrality law that would require people to uncover their faces when using state services. As a result, government officials are coming under fire because some are saying the measure is a crackdown on Muslim women who wear burkas or niqabs.
The new rule calls for a ban on any face coverings for people giving or receiving a service from the state and it also proposes guidelines on how authorities should go about making accommodations based on religious beliefs.
The Quebec National Assembly passed Bill 62 in a 66-to-51 vote.
“An example… If a Muslim woman wants to ride a public bus, the burka needs to come off her face,” explained Dennis Michael Lynch. “The measure if long overdue and something we need here in the U.S.”
