The Mayhill Convenience Store in Mayhill, New Mexico is getting public flak for displaying controversial signs that attack President Obama and Muslims.
The signs, which have been posted at the convenience store for years, depict sentiments such as ‘Kill Obama’ and ‘Obama & Muslims Not Welcome Here.’ One sign even reads ‘Obama loves the USA like O.J. Simpson loved Nicole.’
New signs have also recently been posted in the storefront window, targeting figures like Hillary Clinton and 49er quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Other signs convey direct, hardcore political statements, such as one with the question: ‘Russia has a leader, Al Qaeda has a leader. Where the hell is ours?’
Local community members have begun ridiculing the store owner for his signs. According to one former employee, the owner of the shop would sometimes stop patrons on the street and make them read the signs on display.
This past Saturday, the Council on American-Islamic Relations issued a statement requesting removal of the signs.
“While everyone has the First Amendment right to free speech – even offensive speech – we urge the store’s owner to remove the sign in the interest of common decency and of our nation’s unity at a time of increasing divisions,” stated Ibrahim Hooper, the national communications director for the country’s largest Muslim-rights group.
