New poll reveals percentage of millennials who identify as LGBTQ

A new Harris Poll reveals that 20 percent of millennials identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning.

In the survey, conducted for the activist group GLAAD (formerly the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation), 12 percent of millennials identified as transgender or gender-nonconforming.

The poll discovered that, of all generations, millennials are the least likely to claim they are straight.

Millennials surveyed reported numerous gender identities:

  • 3 percent agender
  • 3 percent gender fluid
  • 2 percent transgender
  • 2 percent unsure or questioning
  • 1 percent bigender
  • 1 percent genderqueer

“This could be attributed to increasingly accepting environments, wherein for many people, family rejection is less frequent, job security is less at risk, and overall safety is less of a concern when coming out,” the study claimed.

There is a consensus among pollsters that more Americans—especially millennials– are identifying as LGBTQ, but they disagree about the numbers. Regarding the percentage of LGBTQ adults under 35, the Harris Poll’s findings were nearly three times higher than those released in a January Gallup survey.
