New poll shows lowest approval rating of Trump’s presidency

Only 38 percent of Americans approve of President Donald J. Trump’s job performance, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal Poll released Sunday.

With 58 percent of those polled expressing disapproval of the president’s performance, the new data shows the lowest approval rating of any modern president at this point in his tenure, according to the pollsters.

The poll indicated individuals who said they were Independent shifted in their opinion from 41 percent approval of the president in September, to 34 percent in October. White adults went from 51 percent approval to 47 percent. White adults without a college degree dropped from 58 percent to 51 percent.

Having lost in those demographics, the president’s approval shows a slight dip compared to the September number from the polling group, Public Opinion Strategies. The new number is also the lowest rating they’ve ever listed for President Trump. His previous approval low with the group came in May, when it was 39 percent.

The poll also shows a decline in President Trump’s personal rating, with 36 percent viewing him positively and 54 percent negatively.

According to the pollsters, 59 percent of those asked disapproved of Trump’s attacks on protesting NFL players.

“This is his worst showing of his young presidency so far,” said Democratic pollster Fred Yang of Hart Research Associates. He co-conducted the survey with Republican pollster Bill McInturff.

The president did score well in his handling of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, with 48 percent approving of his actions in the aftermath of the storms, compared to 27 percent disapproval.

The poll also showed 42 percent positive approval of the way the president is handling of the economy, compared to 37 percent negative.

The poll included 900 adults, polled between Oct. 23 to 26 . It has an overall margin of error of plus or minus 3.3 percentage points.
