The U.S. Labor market is continuing to show strength in early April. According to the most recent jobs report, there were only 234,000 unemployment claims in early April and less than 300,000 people applying for unemployment benefits.
This marks 110 straight weeks of jobless claims being below 300,000, according to MarketWatch, which is the best performance since the 1970s.
The report also showed a record 78 months of employment gains with a very low number of layoffs. Although the U.S. only added 98,000 new jobs last month, after 200,000-plus gains in both January and February, economy experts say the slowdown in March was “weather related” and does not reflect the upbeat labor market.
MarketWatch reports jobless claims fell by 7,000 and anticipates new jobless claims to total 245,000 from April 2 to April 8.
