In a Friday appearance on Fox News’s “Hannity,” former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) contended that “somebody” will likely go to jail following the FBI’s investigation into Russian election interference, but claimed that it will not be President Trump.
“They’re going to get somebody. I don’t think they’re going to get the president, but they’re going to get somebody, and they’re going to get him for something. And they’re probably going to go to jail.”
Referring to the investigation, Gingrich said, “This is like watching an old-fashioned Western movie. This is an Indian hunting party. They’re out looking for a couple scalps, and they’re not going to go home until they get some.”
A report surfaced Wednesday claiming that special counsel Robert Mueller had expanded his investigation which will now also attempt to determine if Trump obstructed justice by dismissing former FBI Director James Comey in May. Trump has labeled the investigation a “witch hunt” and his media allies criticized Mueller.
Mueller has reportedly employed 13 attorneys for the federal investigation into possible connections between the Trump campaign and Russia, and plans to hire more.
On “Hannity,” Gingrich said Mueller had hired too many “high-powered” lawyers to go conclude the investigation “without a scalp.”
Trump’s attorney addressed the reports in a statement, claiming that “The FBI leak of information regarding the president is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal.”
“Hannity” received a promotional boost from the president Friday evening who retweeted host Sean Hannity’s tweet that read, “#Hannity Starts in 30 minutes with @newtgingrich and my monologue on the Deep State’s allies in the media.”
