NFL superstar and University of Southern California running back Joe McKnight was shot and killed Thursday in a road rage shooting in his home state of Louisiana. The shooting happened shortly before 3 p.m. local time, near the suburban area Terrytown of New Orleans. According to Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, multiple witnesses saw a man in an Infiniti sedan grapple McKnight, 28, from his Audi and shoot him multiple times.
Sheriff Newell Normand identified the supposed shooting suspect as Ronald Gasser, 54. Apparently, Gasser and McKnight exchanged words in a verbal altercation due to a traffic mishap, right before Gasser killed him. Officers arrived on the scene and apprehended Gasser, who will likely be charged with homicide.
McKnight had just completed his first season playing for the Canadian Football League’s Saskatchewan Rough Riders. McKnight isn’t the only NFL player to die from similar circumstances this year. Earlier in April, Saints player Will Smith was killed in a road rage incident.
