President Donald J. Trump is on diplomatic tour of Asia, having made stops in China, Japan, South Korea and Vietnam. On Wednesday, while in South Korea, the president warned North Korea not to underestimate the United States, and called on Asia to be unified against the North Korean regime and the nuclear threat it poses.
On Saturday, North Korea’s foreign ministry spokesman said that Trump’s first trip to Asia showed he was a “destroyer” who had had begged for war on the Korean peninsula.
In his speech in South Korea on Wednesday, President Trump said, “It is our responsibility and our duty to confront this danger together, because the longer we wait, the greater the danger grows, and the fewer the options become.”
North Korea, who seems intent on continuing a battle of words with the president, fired back on Saturday, defending its right to develop nuclear weapons as a “righteous and inevitable choice.”
“The reckless remarks by a dotard like Trump can never frighten us or put a stop to our advance,” the foreign ministry statement said, as reported by the state run Korean Central News Agency.
“His current trip to our surrounding region is a warmonger’s visit for confrontation to rid the [Democratic People’s Republic of Korea] of its self-defensive nuclear deterrence,” a the statement continued.
“Trump, during his visit, laid bare his true nature as destroyer of the world peace and stability and begged for a nuclear war on the Korean peninsula.”
As Pyongyang continues to defy international requests to halt its nuclear program, Trump and lawmakers in Washington have tightened sanctions on the rouge state.
The North Korean spokesman said Saturday that North Korea would not be deterred from pursuing its nuclear weapons program by any means.
