Former President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, must really love the 8,200-square-foot Tudor-style nine-bedroom mansion they’ve been renting in tony Washington neighborhood Kalorama, because they just spent $8.1 million to purchase it.
The wealthy neighborhood has always had its share of elite residents, and recent move-ins to Kalorama include President Trump’s daughter Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner, and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.
Washington property records posted on Wednesday show that the Obamas paid for the home through a holding company they control. The mansion was previously owned by Joe Lockhart, a former press secretary to Bill Clinton who currently works as a communications official for the National Football League.
“Given that President and Mrs. Obama will be in Washington for at least another two and a half years, it made sense for them to buy a home rather than continuing to rent property,” said Obama spokesman Kevin Lewis.
Youngest daughter Sasha is still in high school, but her parents have done a lot of globe-tripping since the family left the White House. Perhaps the teenager is being watched by Obama advisor Valerie Jarret, who reportedly also lives in the mansion with the Obamas.
Obama followed Trump to Europe last week and hung out in Germany with Chancellor Angela Merkel while Trump prepared to chastise Merkel and most of the other NATO leaders for not paying their “fair share” of military funding.
Hinting at future political involvement, Michelle Obama spoke at an architecture conference in April, where she said, “There’s just so much more we can do outside of the office, because we won’t have the burden of political baggage.”
Weeks after that, she criticized Trump’s move to change the school lunch nutrition guidelines that she had put in place. “You have to stop and think, ‘Why don’t you want our kids to have good food at school?’” she told an audience at a nutrition summit meeting. “‘What is wrong with you, and why is that a partisan issue?’”
Wealthy enough to also keep their $3 million home in the ritzy Kenwood neighborhood of Chicago’s South Side, the Obamas may choose to return to Chicago after Sasha graduates.
According to Maxwell Rabin, a broker for TTR Sotheby’s International Realty, the Obama’s new home really went up in price. “It sold in 2014 for $5.3 million,” he noted.
