With the Berlin Terrorist attack still fresh in everyone’s minds, President Obama went ahead and cancelled a program requiring Muslim and Arab immigrants to be registered and fingerprinted before entering the United States.
Outgoing President Obama did this a month before Trump takes office and implements his own Immigration program.
The security program, the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System or NSEERS, began in 2001 right after the September 11th, World Trade Center attack and was aimed at adult men coming to the U.S. from 25 different Muslim and Arab countries.
Obviously the goal was to target and detect any potential terrorists.
NSEERS was already in a suspended state because the Obama administration paused it back in 2011 due to the advanced technology of a new visitor entry system, but a notice published on Friday in the Federal Register said the Department of Homeland Security will kill the program for good.
According to the American-Arab Anti Discrimination Committee Legal & Policy Director, Abed Ayoub, “This is the right decision by Secretary [Jeh] Johnson. We commend him, and the Obama administration, for letting it be known that such registry programs are futile and have no place in our country. However the community cannot be at ease; the next administration has indicated that they will consider implementing similar programs. We will work twice as hard to protect our community and ensure such programs do not come to fruition.”
It was Ayoub’s group that pushed to remove this program because, according to them, it put 13,000 men into deportation proceedings. They called the program “un American.”
The group director wrote in his letter to President Obama, “NSEERS was a discriminatory policy that ran counter to the fundamental American values of fairness and equal protection. Rescinding the regulatory framework of the program will ensure that our nation does not target communities based on national origin and faith in the future.”
The American Civil Liberties Union, in complete concurrence with this decision, made this statement, “NSEERS was a completely failed counter-terrorism tool and massive profiling program that didn’t yield a single terrorism conviction in nearly a decade. The ACLU applauds the Obama administration for terminating NSEERS for good. With this action, the U.S. is on the right path to protect Muslim and Arab immigrants from discrimination.”
