Obama Slaps Sanctions Against Russia

The Obama administration announced Thursday afternoon that sanctions are being imposed against Russia, alleging that they tried to influence the American election.

Fox News is reporting that Obama is kicking 35 Russian diplomats out of the United States and is closing two Russian compounds in Maryland and New York by noon Friday.  The 35 diplomats are being ordered to leave the country within 72 hours.

The Treasury Secretary meanwhile has named two individuals it says was involved in  “using cyber-enabled means to cause misappropriation of funds and personal identifying information.”

“These actions follow repeated private and public warnings that we have issued to the Russian government, and are a necessary and appropriate response to efforts to harm U.S. interests in violation of established international norms of behavior,” Obama said in a statement.

The Hill reported:

The sanctions target two of Russia’s main intelligence organizations, as well as six individuals implicated in the campaign. Both the Federal Security Service (FSB), the main successor to the KGB, and the GRU, Russia’s military intelligence operation, were targeted.
“All Americans should be alarmed by Russia’s actions,” Obama said in a statement, adding that the hacks “could only have been directed by the highest levels of the Russian government.”
Obama continued, “Moreover, our diplomats have experienced an unacceptable level of harassment in Moscow by Russian security services and police over the last year. Such activities have consequences.”
The Russian Embassy responded with a barrage of Twitter posts, which, among other things, called Obama a “lame duck.”
