On Tuesday President Barack Obama nominated Abid Riaz Qureshi to serve on the US District Court for the District of Columbia.
“I am pleased to nominate Mr. Qureshi to serve on the United States District Court bench,” Obama said in a statement. “I am confident he will serve the American people with integrity and a steadfast commitment to justice.”
Abid Riaz Qureshi is a partner at the law firm of Latham & Watkins in Washington, which specializes in false claims, health care fraud and securities violations.
It is unlikely Qureshi’s nomination will be confirmed before the end of Obama’s term as president. Senate Republicans have promised not to hold any hearings on nominations since the president’s nomination of Judge Merrick Garland to the U.S. Supreme Court in March. Republicans believe that since Obama is a lame duck president, it is up to the next president to decide who’s nominated to fill the vacant seats in our government.
Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump has stated that if he were to win the presidency he would not be in favor of a Muslim. Trump has stated a Muslim or Latino judge would be biased against him due to his comments and policies proposals.
