According to a new report from POLITICO, former President Obama is expected to speak out against President Trump’s reported decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. The news organization which broke the story about Trump’s plan to dump DACA Sunday, listed an unidentified spokesperson close to Obama as saying the former president plans to post a statement on Facebook and link it to Twitter when the time comes.
During his last news conference as president, before transitioning the leadership position to Trump, Obama said an attack or an unraveling of the “Dreamer” program would cause him to speak out publicly and condemn the action.
“The notion that we would just arbitrarily, or because of politics, punish those kids, when they didn’t do something themselves … would merit my speaking out,” he said, according to The Los Angeles Times.
POLITICO originally reported late Sunday night that Trump has made the decision to end DACA, which temporarily blocked the deportation of illegal immigrants who were brought to the country as minors and sought work permits. Nearly 800,000 people brought to the country illegally as minors and children have benefitted from the program.
One White House official told Politico that Trump’s decision reportedly includes a six-month delay, granting Congress a window in which it could step in before the protections officially expire.
Trump is facing resistance from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle; many are calling on the president not to end the program.
House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) claims he believes it’s something “Congress has to fix.” Fox News’ Tucker Carlson, who hosts “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” criticized Republican members of the House and Senate who expressed opposition to the elimination of DACA. Carlson claimed some Republicans, including Ryan, Rep. Mike Coffman (R-Colo.), Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), appear to be more interested in preserving policies set in place by Obama than in what Trump wants to do for the nation.
