TOTAL new Republican registrations since the fall 2015 election is 145,000 – but Republicans aren’t even excited about it. Why?
Pennsylvania voters are fed up, and more have registered as new Republicans since last fall than in the past four years combined. The number one reason for the voter registration / party-switching surge? Donald Trump. And that’s why Republican officials are not turning somersaults over their new voter base.
Many of the people switching parties to vote for Trump have been Democrats all their lives. Their families have been Democrats for generations. But they’re fed up and leaving in droves, saying the party “no longer speaks their language.” One voter said, “I didn’t move away from the Democratic Party – it moved away from me.”
They’re tired of the political correctness, the intolerance, and the dying industries. They’re frustrated that the Democratic Party is more focused on metropolitan voters and fast-growing minority groups, while taking hard-working blue-collar voters for granted. The steel mills and coal mining that once thrived and prospered are now gone, and people are now struggling to survive.
A retired postmaster, a welder, a former Democratic County Commissioner and a laid-off school bus driver are all voting for Trump. A retired middle school principal, a steelworkers’ daughter, a laid-off airport worker and a laid-off truck driver are all on board as well. They’re so serious, they’re volunteering for the Trump campaign, they’re hanging up banners, and putting up yard signs… and when one sign is stolen, they put up another one.
One volunteer working at the Trump headquarters said so many supporters have come in to pick up lawn signs or volunteer that the office has had to open a second floor, and signs are limited to just one per person. “I don’t care how many signs they steal,” the laid-off school bus driver said. “It’s not going to change the voters.”
