A Palestinian man has confessed to murdering his Israeli girlfriend who went missing in May, news outlets from Jerusalem are reporting.
The body of Michal Halimi, 29, a Jewish woman from Binyamin in the West Bank, was reportedly found by police on July 24 after her boyfriend, Muhammad Harouf, an Arab from Nablus, Palestine, confessed to her murder.
Halimi was married and eight months pregnant, but had become involved with the Palestinian man and had gone to stay with him.
Police discovered a Facebook post where the two had announced they planned to become engaged, and learned that the two had been together in a Tel Aviv suburb on the day she disappeared.
Harouf reportedly confessed to the murder, showing police how he had choked Halimi and thrown rocks at her head before burying her. At the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court, Harouf said to reporters regarding the reason he killed her: “I wanted to free prisoners.”
He also yelled, “I’ll kill all the Jews,” as he was leaving the courtroom, kicking a guard in the process.
“In the course of the investigation, it emerged that the missing woman had voluntarily left Binyamin and, apparently, was staying at the home of a young Palestinian man from Nablus who she was in a relationship with,” police said Wednesday.
A civil rights watchdog group, the Israeli NGO Yad L’Achim, said Halimi’s husband had asked them for help in finding his wife soon after her disappearance, and accused the police of being negligent for taking so long to solve the murder case.
The group said this happens often: When Jewish women become involved in relationships with Arab men, they end up in violent, and sometimes deadly situations. “In Yad L’Achim, we encounter such cases on a regular basis, and try to help and support these women in finding a way to build a new life,” the watchdog group said.
In an interview with the woman’s husband, Aaron Halimi said he rejects the police’s version of the event and plans to file a lawsuit against the Israeli police. “The truth will come to light,” he asserted.
