Palestinian president orders staff to cut all United States ties

In the wake of President Donald Trump’s early December declaration that the United States is formally recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and moving the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, the leader of the Palestinian National Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, has reportedly instructed his staff to sever all ties with U.S. officials at every level.

In a Dec. 6 speech, Trump said, “I have determined that it is time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.”

Since Trump’s announcement, Abbas has come to view Trump as a “lost cause,” according to the Times of Israel.

Abbas’ order included the dissolution of relations between the Palestinians and American diplomats posted at the U.S. Consulate in East Jerusalem.

Breitbart News reported that the White House is seeking a Palestinian liaison other than Abbas.

Last week, the Palestinians declined to meet with Vice President Mike Pence, who was in the region visiting U.S. soldiers stationed in Afghanistan.

According to a report broadcast by Channel 2 News, Abbas was “not only closing the door but throwing away the key” on the prospect of any future diplomatic relations between Palestine and America.

The Times of Israel interviewed an unnamed White House official who responded to the Channel 2 report, saying, “Apparently, the outlet that has reported this hasn’t been paying attention over the past several months. As we have said over and over again, we will not impose a peace deal. That is not news. We anticipated a cooling off period and remain as committed to peace as ever and are working hard on our plan, which we will present when the time is right.”

The Palestinians, according to Channel 2, have no plans to lift the boycott of the United States that was implemented in response to Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
