Paul Ryan Retains House Speaker Role

Republican Congressman Paul Ryan was re-elected as House Speaker Tuesday afternoon, as lawmakers returned to Capitol Hill to begin the 2017 session.

The Washington Post reported that all Republicans but one supported Ryan for re-election as House Speaker, a position he first won in 2015.

Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky was the lone holdout, voting for Rep. Daniel Webster, who he said would “drain the swamp.”

There are 241 Republicans and 194 Democrats in the House.

All but four Democrats voted for Nancy Pelosi, re-electing her as their party leader.
