Pew Research has the most reliable information about Muslims in the US to date. In 2017, they conducted a nation wide survey of Muslims which is eye-opening, and the basis for the research and information we will provide in our upcoming film, They Come to America 4.
Pew states that “Muslims constitute a strongly Democratic constituency. Three-quarters of Muslim voters say they cast a ballot for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election, and two-thirds of U.S. Muslims overall say they disapprove of the way Donald Trump is handling his job as president.”
Another interesting note is that most Muslims continue to hold the view that immigrants strengthen the U.S. Meanwhile, two-thirds say they would prefer to have a larger government that provides more services over a smaller government that provides fewer services.”
Pew points out that most Muslims disapprove of Trump’s job as president. “Trump’s approval ratings are particularly low among U.S.-born black Muslims: Just 7% in this group approve of his job performance.”
Very concerning is that 17% of US Muslims state there is support within US Islamic communities for acts of extremism against Americans. Tack onto that the 14% who say suicide attacks are justified and the potential for domestic acts of terror become more of a reality.
Slightly more than half of Muslim Americans identify with the Sunni branch of Islam (55%). This is concerning considering that the Brookings Institute did a study a few years back and concluded that over the twenty‐five year period from 1981‐2006, Sunni terrorism has featured continuous, mid‐to‐high intensity operations viewing war against infidels and apostates as a perpetual condition.
