“Pizzagate” shooter receives sentencing

The infamous vigilante who fired an assault weapon in a Washington DC pizza shop because he suspected Hillary Clinton was running a child sex trafficking ring in the basement was sentenced to four years in prison this week, the Huffington Post reported Thursday.

Edgar Maddison Welch was certain that Hillary Clinton conspired to hold a child sex trafficking ring in the basement of Comet Ping Pong restaurant in Northwestern DC. So in December, he took matters into his own hands.

The North Carolina man brought with him an AR-15 rifle and a .38 revolver, which he fired multiple times in his search of the hidden room where the child ring was located. He was peaceful upon finding out he was wrong, however, as court documents state Welch “surrendered peacefully when he found no evidence that underage children were being harbored in the restaurant.”

Adding a tinge of sadness to the story is that, opposed to legitimate mental health issues, Welch appeared to legitimately believe there was a child porn ring and thought he was saving lives.

“It was never my intention to harm or frighten innocent lives, but I realize now just how foolish and reckless my decision was,” he wrote in a letter included in a sentencing memorandum.

Nonetheless, the court wanted to make the sentencing harsh so as to discourage other vigilantes.
