A group called #DirsuptJ20 is planning to lead thousands of protesters to Washington next week to ruin President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration.
According to lead organizer Legba Carrefour, many of the ready-to-go protesters began preparing for this moment in June. The massive Inauguration Day protest has been titled “Operation Clusterfuck.”
“We’re not making the argument that we’re going to stop the inauguration; that is a physical impossibility,” Carrefour said of the thousands of protesters who have signed up to #DisruptJ20. “We are making the argument that we can ruin the notion that this is a peaceful transition of power.”
According to Carrefour, the first stage of the protest involves blocking off major highways and roads to make traffic coming through a “total nightmare.” The second stage involves barricading city checkpoints that lead to inauguration festivities to make it difficult for attendees to enter. Signs for Black Lives Matter, women’s rights, and immigration will be heavily displayed.
“You have to start looking at the idea of the metropolis is what actually furthers and enables global capitalism and the modern state,” Carrefour said. “The reason why Black Lives Matter started blocking highways was because highways and the normal functioning of the city is actually intrinsic to things like racism.”
The third stage involves #DisruptJ20 participants conducting multiple marches. An activist march will depart Columbus Circle at noon and head toward McPherson Square, a few blocks from the White House.
Carrefour claims this march has a permit. However, a second “anti-capitalist” march, which is said to be more “confrontational,” will occur along Logan Circle. This march does not have a permit.
“We are preparing for the possibility of sporadic fights breaking out because people are very emotional about this,” Carrefour said in regards to any trouble #DisruptJ20 might encounter. “So it wouldn’t shock us if confrontations did occur.”
The final stage, Carrefour told the Washington Examiner, will involve #DisruptJ20 protesters “going to all the inaugural balls and ruining them” after the marches. Carrefour did not give detail as to how they will accomplish this stage.
“If, honestly, the headline the next day is ‘Trump inaugurated to thunderous applause, no trouble happens,’ that would be a failure,” Carrefour said of what he hopes the protests will achieve. “But I don’t think that’s going to happen.”
