Two people were injured when a plane crashed on the 405 Freeway in Irvine, California Friday morning.

FAA officials reported that the pilot had called in declaring an emergency just after taking off from the John Wayne Airport. He was attempting to return to the airport, but ending up crashing on the freeway.

Cell phone video taken by someone on the highway shows the plane flying low, then bursting into flames as it lands on the freeway.

CBS Los Angeles reported that an off-duty fire captain was on the road when the plane crashed, and his vehicle was just clipped by the plane. He rushed to assist after the crash.

The man and woman on board the plane were reported to be in their 50s or 60s, and were taken to the hospital with major injuries, but their injuries are not considered life threatening.

The woman was said to have already gotten out of the plane by the time help arrived, and was trying to remove the man from the plane.

No other injuries were reported.
