Planned Parenthood Adopts New Strategy to Normalize Abortions

In an effort to eliminate the “stigma and shame” surrounding abortion, Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards urged women Tuesday to escalate the pro-abortion movement by publicly bragging about their own abortions.

While speaking at a women’s conference in California, Richards said, “I think it’s time for us to be bold. And so I want to ask you to do something or think about doing something. And that is to share your own story. This is the time to do it.”

Richards strongly encouraged women to speak publicly about the care they received from Planned Parenthood clinics, and their personal abortion experiences.

“Maybe you had a pregnancy and you had to make a decision,” she said. “And thank goodness you could make that decision in consultation with your doctor and with your family, and not your member of Congress. Those stories are important to share, because you’ll never know the thousands of women that you give courage to or comfort to because you shared your story.”

Richards claimed that the politics of abortion will not change until people are convinced that the practice is “just part of life.” Her goal is to affect attitudes and, in turn, change the culture to one of acceptance of abortion.

“It’s something that we have to get rid of stigma and shame about,” Richards said. “And so if we do that, I think we can make progress.”

Pro-abortion activists have already been practicing what Richards preaches, but the tactic has been met with mixed reactions from other abortion advocates who think the practice should not be lauded. Actress Lena Dunham raised eyebrows and ire in December when she announced to a podcast audience that she has not yet had an abortion, but wishes she had.

“It’s a difficult decision for all women, and, while some have the procedure without any emotional baggage, many women feel conflicted about terminating a pregnancy,” a woman wrote in The Daily Beast, illustrating a divide over Richards’s strategy even among abortion advocates. “Dunham’s flippant attitude is insulting to women who have actually gone through it.”
