Poland to make huge defense purchase from U.S.

A Polish news agency is reporting that Poland’s government has agreed to purchase the Patriot Missile Defense System from the U.S.  The report was released on Wednesday in tandem with President Donald Trump’s visit to Warsaw.

The news agency, which is called PAP, is not revealing the source of the information, but they did report that Poland’s Defense Ministry will disclose the deal with the U.S. Department of Defense during an upcoming news conference Thursday.

The agreement follows an announcement by Polish Defense Minister Antoni Macierewicz, who said in March that he intended to establish an $8 billion contract with the US based defense contractor Raytheon Co, by the end of the year. Raytheon produces the Patriot system.

As pointed out by President Trump in May, very few NATO members meet the required defense-spending target of 2 percent. Poland is one of the member nation’s that does meet its obligation.
