During a ceremony on Saturday, Polish leaders celebrated the arrival of U.S. troops to Poland – a move that has aggravated Russia.
The deployment is the first time that Western forces have been moved in on a more permanent basis, in an effort to aid NATO on the eastern flank.
Defense Minister Antoni Macierewicz said of the historic moment, “We have waited for you for a very long time. We waited for decades, sometimes feeling we had been left alone, sometimes almost losing hope, sometimes feeling that we were the only one who protected civilization from aggression that came from the east.”
The deployment includes 3,500 American troops from Fort Carson, Colorado, in response to “Russia’s annexation of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 and its backing of separatist insurgents in Ukraine’s east,” said Fox News.
According to an AFP report, U.S. ambassador to Poland Paul James said, “This is America’s most capable fighting force: a combat-ready, highly trained U.S. armored brigade, with our most advanced equipment and weaponry. This force embodies America’s iron-clad commitment to honor our NATO treaty obligation to defend our NATO allies.”
The Polish government, who organized several celebratory events across the country, were relieved with the arrival of the Americans.
“This is an important day for Poland, for Europe, for our common defense,” Prime Minister Beata Szydlo told the U.S. soldiers.
As he posed for selfies with Polish citizens, newly arrived American M.P. Peter Gomez said that he felt “very welcomed,” the AFP reported.
Gomez added, “I’m surprised actually. People are very excited to see us.”
