On Wednesday, Border Patrol agents arrested a violent illegal immigrant near Nogales, AZ who physically assaulted an agent, then escaped while seeking medical treatment, reports Breitbart.

The illegal alien, identified as Carlos Erazo-Velasquez, 37, from Honduras, has a criminal history related to drug offenses and has been previously deported from the U.S., according to Border Patrol.

Leading up to his arrest, the man became combative with Border Patrol Agents and was finally “apprehended only after reaching a state of exhaustion,” according to U.S. Border Patrol Agent Art Del Cueto, acting president of National Border Patrol Council (NBPC) Local 2544.

Del Cueto told reporters on Saturday that Erazo-Velasquez complained of not feeling well and collapsed after the pursuit. The agents proceeded to take the illegal alien to a Tucson’s Banner University Medical Center, where he managed to escape.

During the search for the escapee, immigration protesters began to show up on the scene.

The report states that some of the activists even blocked a Border Patrol supervisor’s vehicle. While the chaos unfolded, agents moved to a Tucson Police Department (TPD) parking lot to set up an incident command center. Initially, the TPD cooperated with the border agent’s efforts and allowed them to use their facility, though they later changed their tone and told the agents to leave the property, said Del Cueto.

“One of our agents informed me that a TPD ‘management-level supervisor’ advised the agents that his department could not continue with assisting the Border Patrol,” he stated. “He said they were ‘busy with local issues.’”

De Cueto said agents were told, “Due to the recent political climate, the Tucson Police Department could no longer assist the Border Patrol.”

“I can almost understand if they were too busy with local issues to assist in the search,” he explained. “But, there is no excuse for kicking our agents off the property and delaying our search efforts.”

Del Cueto reiterated to Breitbart that it was not an immigration search, but rather, a search for a known criminal who was “so desperate that he would assault a federal agent.”

“This man being on the loose is a danger to the community and any other law enforcement officer he might encounter,” Del Cueto said.

Erazo-Velasquez faces charges of illegal entry and assault on a federal officer.
