A gunman firing seemingly at random in an around a senior care center Friday morning shot and killed an Ohio police officer and two nursing home employees at a facility in Kirkersville, about 20 miles east of Columbus.
According to Licking County Sheriff Randy Thorpe, three bodies were found inside the Pine Kirk Care Center and it was believed the shooter was one of the deceased.
Thorpe reported that Kirkersville police chief Steven Eric Disario, 36, was dispatched Friday morning after receiving a report of a man with a firearm. Disario’s last radio transmissions indicated that he had the gunman in his sights yet, when backup units arrived, Disario was found dead in the street.
Thorpe noted that Disario was the father of six, with another baby on the way.
Witness Jeffrey Griffin said he heard shots fired as he was dropping off his children at a babysitter’s house. People “took off running” from the Pine Kirk Care Center, he said, and admitted that he was “pretty stunned.”
Authorities had previously advised nearby residents to remain inside their homes.
Kirkersville Elementary School was placed on lockdown as the incident unfolded, and was ultimately closed for the day.
Thorpe noted that he will hold another news conference later Friday afternoon.
