In what was a swift and decisive move Monday night, President Trump fired acting U.S. Attorney General Sally Yates.
AG Yates, a two-time appointee of President Barack Obama, had earlier announced that she is unable to defend President Trump’s executive order on immigration because she is not convinced it is legal.
At 9 p.m. ET Monday, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, Dana Boente was sworn in as Yates’ replacement. Boente’s service in this role will likely be brief, pending Sen. Jeff Session’s anticipated senate confirmation for the appointment.
Wasting no time Monday evening, Boente immediately instructed DOJ lawyers to “defend the lawful orders of our President.”
