Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), who has been one of President Trump’s strongest allies in Congress, shocked many conservatives on Thursday when he broke ranks with Republicans and voted with Democrats in favor of the War Powers Resolution, a non-binding resolution curbing the president’s authority to order military action against Iran.
In explaining his vote, Gaetz declared, “I think a few of the advisers of the president are trying to slow-walk the administration into war.”
Gaetz stated that Trump is even more “anti-war” than he is, and reasoned that “if our service members have the courage to fight and die in these wars, Congress ought to have the courage to vote for or against them.”
The proposal, pushed forward by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, passed in a final vote of 224-194, with eight Democrats voting against it and three Republicans voting in favor of it. The other two Republicans who joined Gaetz were Tom Massie of Kentucky and Francis Rooney of Florida.
Gaetz was blasted on Twitter for his vote. One person wrote, “You stabbed the President in the back. You stabbed us all in the back. We thought you were one of the few good ones. This was a Democrat stunt. It’s sole purpose is to hurt Trump. that’s it. I can’t believe you did this man. Beyond disappointed.”
“This is a sellout to the Troops,” wrote another. “As a veteran I’m appalled!” yet another Twitter user said.
“You’ve ruined your relationship with the voters of Florida,” a Trump supporter warned, telling Gaetz that he “blew it big time.”
