Authorities unveiled more details on Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock Wednesday, revealing he’s been stockpiling weaponry since 1982 and that he bought 33 guns within the past year.
Despite the excessive purchases, Special Agent in Charge Jill Snyder said the transactions didn’t alarm the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms as most of the guns were rifles.
“From October 2016 to September 28, 2017, he purchased 33 firearms, [a] majority of them rifles,” Snyder said on “CBS This Morning.” “We wouldn’t get notified of the purchases of the rifles, we would only get notified if there was a multiple sale, which would be two or more handguns in an individual purchase.”
Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo noted earlier in the week that some of the weapons, which ranged in caliber from the .223 associated with an AR-15-style rifle to the .308 associated with heavier tactical arms, had been converted from semi-automatic to fully automatic fire, though he said an investigation is still underway.
What has investigators puzzled is that Paddock acted alone. Many media pundits have speculated in the days following the attack that Paddock, despite his arsenal, may have not been working alone.
Some have speculated Paddock’s girlfriend, Marilou Danley, may be more involved than she let on to investigators. Others are claiming Paddock had assistance from outside groups.
