The announcement issued Monday that the Trump administration will include a question on the 2020 census asking respondents if they are U.S. citizens has created an uproar.

The statement said that Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross “has determined that reinstatement of a citizenship question on the 2020 decennial census questionnaire is necessary to provide complete and accurate census block level data.”

Opponents of the decision are furious, claiming that it is just a move to take electoral power away from Democrats, as they feel that those who are not citizens will now be afraid to complete the census, which will in turn give incorrect data about how many people are living in certain areas. A reduced number of residents appearing on the census may, in turn, affect the electoral maps.

California has now threatened to file a lawsuit over the matter.
