Last week, Berkeley officials informed BridgeUSA and Berkeley College Republicans that the scheduled speech by conservative writer Ann Coulter was being canceled due to security concerns. It seems more often than not, of late, when conservative political figures have dared to step foot on the campus, violent clashes have occurred.
“It is a sad day, indeed, when the birthplace of the Free Speech Movement is morphing before our eyes into the cemetery of free speech on college campuses,” said Harmeet Dhillon, who represents the Republican student association that invited Coulter to speak.
This outcropping of protests, often riots, which persists and seems to have gained a stronghold across much of the nation has us wondering, is this just a “youth thing,” which every generation demonstrates? As baby boomers grow collectively older, are we just complaining about the younger generation, true to form? Or, is this newer generation really over the top?
