According to a report from earlier this week Monday, President Trump said exclusively to Fox News that within the next few days, he may be issuing a pardon for former Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio who was convicted two weeks ago for ignoring a judge’s order to stop his crackdown on illegal immigration.
President Trump reportedly told a Fox News reporter, “I am seriously considering a pardon for Sheriff Arpaio. He has done a lot in the fight against illegal immigration. He’s a great American patriot and I hate to see what has happened to him.”
Arpaio, 85, was found “guilty” by U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton of “criminal contempt” on Monday, July 31, for violating a federal judge’s order in 2011 to stop traffic patrols targeting suspected illegal aliens in which he was accused of racial profiling.
After his conviction, Arpaio published a long letter that subsequently went viral and noted the irony under which he had been convicted because he cooperated with federal law enforcement agencies when he encountered illegal aliens. However, now, the current Department of Justice is going after local law enforcement agencies who DON’T cooperate with ICE in enforcing illegal alien laws.
His sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 5 and could result in up to six months behind the very bars which he previously used to detain illegal aliens. However, due to his age and no prior criminal convictions, it is doubted that he will actually receive jail time.
President Trump stated, “Is there anyone in local law enforcement who has done more to crack down on illegal immigration than Sheriff Joe? He has protected people from crimes and saved lives. He doesn’t deserve to be treated this way.”
Fox News said Trump told them he may move quickly on the issue, saying, “I might do it right away, maybe early this week. I am seriously thinking about it.”
When FOX reached out to Arpaio on Monday, the former sheriff expressed surprise, saying, “I am happy he understands the case. I would accept the pardon because I am 100 percent not guilty.”
However, Arpaio also expressed concern that Trump might be hit with a backlash, saying, “I would never ask him for a pardon, especially if it causes heat. I don’t want to do anything that would hurt the president.”
Indeed, the backlash has begun; the left has blasted out a barrage of Twitter posts in outrage over the notion that President Trump may pardon the former sheriff.
Those opposing the suggestion of a pardon are attempting to connect it to the Charlottesville violence, claiming Trump is sending a “signal” to the Nazis that he’s “still with them,” and attacking Arpaio as “racist.”
