The open seat in the House of Representatives will be filled after the special election in Georgia takes place today. The stakes are high for both Democrats and Republicans.
The seat was left vacant by Tom Price, who was tapped by President Trump to lead Health and Human Services.
Democrats are banking on newcomer Jon Ossoff to be the face of the anti-Trump resistance. Ossoff’s ground game has grown into a massive operation of more than 12,000 volunteers. If he loses, it could be a major setback for Democrats in 2018 and the movement to stop Trump could fizzle.
For the GOP. If it loses the seat, Trump is sure to be viewed as the reason why, and therefore Republicans could space themselves further from the president than they have already. This would make it virtually impossible to “make America great again.” If the GOP wins today, it could signal that voters still believe in the Trump agenda despite months of turmoil.
