Cafes, schools and daycare centers banning pork to “not offend muslim refugees”.
Is Germany committing cultural suicide? It’s happening at an alarming rate – out of “religious considerations”, a growing number of cafes, childcare centers and schools no longer serve sausages, bacon or ham.
German politicians of the CDU (Christian Democratic Union) are now campaigning to make it mandatory that pork be kept on the menu.
“The protection of minorities – including for religious reasons – must not mean that the majority is overruled in their free decision by ill-conceived consideration,” said CDU’s Daniel Günther. “The consumption of pork belongs to our culture,” Günther added. “No one should be obliged to do so, but we also don’t want the majority having to refrain from pork.”
German sausages are part of the country’s culture. At Oktoberfest in Munich, the largest beer festival in the world – sausages are served alongside steins of beer. Pig farming is particularly important in the northern state of Schleswig Holstein, where agricultural production is the source of 17% of state revenues.
Germany has accepted nearly 1.1 million refugees from Syria. Crime and attacks by refugees has risen so dramatically that German citizens are now calling for stricter immigration rules.
