Following Friday’s stabbing that left two men dead after they attempted to stop a man from yelling anti-Muslim slurs, the mayor of Portland, Oregon, has asked the federal government to cancel a pro-Trump free-speech rally and an anti-Sharia law march in the city.
In a post on his Facebook page, Mayor Ted Wheeler said that he has asked the federal government to revoke a permit issued for an event scheduled on June 4, and requested that a permit not be issued by the government for another event being held June 10.
The “Trump Free Speech Rally” is slated for June 4 while the “March Against Sharia” is scheduled for June 10. Both events are being held at Shrunk Plaza in Portland. According to Wheeler, the federal government controls permitting at that venue.
“Our city is in mourning, our community’s anger is real, and the timing and subject of these events can only exacerbate an already difficult situation,” Wheeler said.
Wheeler also asked organizers to cancel both events, describing the planned rallies as “alt-right demonstrations.”
“There is never a place for bigotry or hatred in our community, and especially not now,” Wheeler said.
Wheeler issued his requests following the Friday night stabbing of two men on a Portland commuter train after they attempted to stop Jeremy Joseph Christian from yelling anti-Muslim slurs at two women aboard the train. The victims have been identified as Taliesin Myrddin Namkai Meche, 23, and Ricky John Best, 53.
Christian fatally stabbed the two victims, and wounded another who also intervened. He was arrested and faces charges of attempted murder and aggravated murder.
According to the Facebook page for the “Trump Free Speech Rally,” the event will feature “speakers exercising their free speech, live music, flags, and an uplifting experience to bring back strength and courage to those who believe in freedom.”
Organizers for the “March Against Sharia” claim that Sharia law is “incompatible with our Constitution and with American values.”
