This holiday weekend, the new Baywatch movie starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is taking a nosedive at the box office. The film cost a whopping $70 million to produce, but it will likely take in only $27 million during its holiday weekend launch in 3,647 theaters.
The premise of the movie is about lifeguards who try to uncover a criminal plot that threatens their life at the beach.
Casting ‘The Rock” in a film is usually a guaranteed win for movie studios. Therefore, the failure of Baywatch on this holiday weekend has to be considered from all angles. In addition to poor reviews, could it be that conservative movie-goers are boycotting Johnson after his recent appearance on Saturday Night Live?
Just last week, Johnson teamed up with his liberal anti-Trump friends, Alec Baldwin and Tom Hanks, to poke fun at President Trump and to further push The Rock’s recent announcement that he is considering a run for the White House in 2020.
Reacting to overwhelmingly bad reviews, Johnson took to Twitter to call out his critics, who used adjectives such as “shallow”, “stupid”, “misguided”, and “wantonly crude” to describe the television show remake. Johnson tweeted, “Fans LOVE the movie. Critics HATE it. What a glaring disconnect.”

Baywatch might have the worst CGI I've seen in a big Hollywood movie in years. I've seen better fire in a PS2 game. pic.twitter.com/k20CUdius2
