Senator Corey Booker (D-N.J.) took to Facebook on Tuesday to release an introduction of the Marijuana Justice Act, his bill for legalizing marijuana nationwide.
Likely part of a ploy to test the waters for a 2020 presidential run, Booker’s bill would also retroactively expunge the criminal records of people convicted federally on marijuana charges.
Booker spoke about the overcrowding of federal prisons with individuals charged with victimless crimes and overwhelmingly from minority groups.
Booker said, “When you see these marijuana arrests happening so much in our country, targeting certain communities — poor communities, minority communities — targeting people with an illness, targeting [disproportionately] our veterans, you see the injustice of it all.”
Booker has been a leading member of the Democratic party in recent years, and is often heard lambasting the GOP healthcare bill for causing “death, pain, and suffering.” He advocated crossing party lines to fight Trump by crafting legislation alongside Sen. Linsey Graham (R-S.C.) to prevent the president from firing Attorney General Jeff Sessions and special counsel Robert Mueller.
Among the Democratic base, Booker’s name rivals that of liberal giants such as Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, joining them on Public Policy Polling’s list of top five Democrats for beating Trump in 2020. The poll projected Booker would beat Trump 43 percent to 41 percent.
Along with Warren, Sanders, and Booker, former Vice President Joe Biden, and freshman Sen. Kamala Harris (D, Calif.) make up the top Democrats in contention for 2020. And with the most popular candidate being Joe Biden, who might not even run, it can be expected the other candidates will continue to drop brand-building policy proposals such as Booker’s marijuana legislation.
