President Donald Trump is none too pleased with a military judge’s ruling Friday that former Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl will be dishonorably discharged from the military but won’t receive jail time.

“The decision on Sergeant Bergdahl is a complete and total disgrace to our country and to our military,” Trump tweeted shortly after the ruling came down Friday.

Bergdahl deserted from his post in Afghanistan in 2009, only to fall in the hands of the Taliban for five years.

He was charged with desertion and misbehavior before the enemy; however, the judge saw it fit to render him a dishonorable discharge from the military and a decrease in his rank, from sergeant to private.

“Sgt. Bergdahl has looked forward to today for a long time,” Eugene Fidell, Bergdahl’s civilian attorney, said at a news conference after the sentence was announced.

“As everyone knows he was a captive of the Taliban for nearly five years, and three more years have elapsed while the legal process unfolded. He has lost nearly a decade of his life.”

The sentence is effective immediately, except for the dishonorable discharge, which Bergdahl is appealing, according to Fidell.
