President Trump visited Long Island Friday, spotlighting crime and the activities of the MS-13 gang. During a speech, he re-confirmed his intention to wipe out the gang, and made some comments that drew a wave of criticism.

Speaking to a group of police cadets at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood, Trump talked about stopping the violent MS-13 gang, calling them “animals” who are ruining neighborhoods.

“We’re going to destroy the vile cartel MS-13,” Trump said. “They have transformed peaceful parks and beautiful neighborhoods into blood-stained killing fields. They’re animals.”

Trump raised eyebrow’s however, when he suggested that in arresting MS-13 gang members, officers shouldn’t be “too nice.”

“When you see these thugs being thrown into the back of a paddy wagon — you just see them thrown in, rough. I say, please don’t be too nice,” Trump said. “Like when you guys put someone in the car and you’re protecting their head… You can take your hand away, ok?”

The cadets gave an enthusiastic response, cheering and laughing after the president’s remarks. But the Suffolk County Police Department wasn’t amused.

They responded in two Twitter posts, combined here, writing: “The SCPD has strict rules & procedures relating to the handling of prisoners. Violations of those rules are treated extremely seriously. As a department, we do not and will not tolerate roughing up of prisoners.”

Twitter went wild after the President’s comments. The Huffington Post tweeted: “President Donald Trump endorses police brutality in speech to law enforcement.”

One Twitter user reported being “chilled” by the police cadets’ response to Trump’s speech, writing: “Trump’s speech to the Long Island police has been as sickening as any speech he has ever made. Chilled by the responses of the cops present.”

Another user spoke in defense of the comment, writing: “MS Gang deserves anything they get. Were they worried when they been killing people?”

President Trump placed heavy blame on the Obama administration for allowing the MS-13 gang to grow and expand in the United States, saying, “The last, very weak administration allowed thousands and thousands of gang members to cross our borders and enter into our communities where they wreak havoc on our citizens. As you know, the blood-thirsty cartel known as MS-13 has infiltrated our schools, threatening innocent children. We’ve seen the horrible assaults and many killings all over Long Island.”
