George W. Bush’s former chief ethics lawyer, Richard Painter, reacted to President Trump’s most recent comments regarding the possible prosecution of Hillary Clinton, calling his actions “impeachable.”

“Pressuring AG to prosecute the person who lost the election is an impeachable offense if we value free elections,” Painter tweeted.

Early on Tuesday morning, Trump took a shot at Attorney General Jeff Sessions, saying he “has taken a VERY weak position on Hillary Clinton crimes.”

In November, Trump said that he was probably not going to investigate the former secretary of state. “It’s just not something that I feel very strongly about,” he told The New York Times, saying that his prosecuting Clinton would be “very, very divisive for the country.”

However, the president’s tweets now suggest that he feels differently, after facing backlash every day over accusations that he and his election team “colluded with Russia” to win the 2016 election though no real evidence exists.

On Monday, Trump described Sessions as “beleaguered” and recently told The New York Times that he wished the attorney general hadn’t recused himself from the Justice Department’s investigation into Russian election meddling.

After it was revealed that he did not disclose during his confirmation hearings that he met with Russia’s ambassador to the United States during the 2016 campaign, Sessions, a former senator from Alabama, removed himself from anything having to do with the investigation.

The Washington Post reported rumors that possible replacements for Sessions are being considered by the White House, to include Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R). However, both men called this “fake news.”
