The celebrity fashion designer behind singer Joy Villa’s pro-Donald Trump dress worn at last night’s Grammy Awards is a Filipino-born immigrant and naturalized citizen who is a big fan of the new president.
On Sunday night, Villa stunned the world when she appeared at the Grammy’s wearing an elegant ‘Make America Great Again’ gown designed by Andre Soriano.
The American fashion designer said the message behind the dress is one of positivity, love, and unity.
He told The Hollywood Reporter:
“It’s more so about love,” he said. “We all live on this planet. I’ve never been in the political arena. However, it’s just so crazy that people are getting beat up because they voted for Trump, or this and that, someone wants to bomb the White House. I am an American, I moved here from the Philippines, and I highly believed in the trueness of what this country can bring. It’s about bringing people together, that’s the message.”
Soriano said the inspiration for the dress came after he heard Madonna’s anti-Trump rant at the Women’s March on Washington and her comment about blowing up the White House.
“I heard that somebody wanted to bomb the White House. And then I saw the Women’s March,” Soriano said. ‘Joy Villa is all about love with her music. I’m like, ‘Joy, we have to make a statement on what is right for our country, of what we believe in, for the Constitution.'”
He added, “There are a lot of people that are in power that really misconstrued what this country stands for… I love this country. I’m from the Philippine islands. I am a proud American. I really love this country. I am a minority, Joy is black. America is about immigrants.”
In an exclusive interview with The Gateway Pundit, Soriano told reporters he immigrated from the Philippines to the U.S. at age 16 to pursue his dream of becoming a fashion designer. His dream came true. After being discovered on Rihanna’s Bravo reality show, “Styled to Rock,” he launched his own label in San Diego in 2013, which designs and sells ready-to-wear and red-carpet looks online.
